Chances are you’re working on your own creative project. Even as I write this, hundreds of thousands of creatives, those fortunate enough to live a life where the opportunity for creativity is presented to them, are busy at work. And why? What compels us to create? For me it is simply the art of precision. I like to make things tidy. I like a neat space to work in. This is not only a personality trait of mine, but something that goes much deeper. I want my surroundings, my life, and my loved ones’ lives to be tucked-in and in place. I like things tidy. Did I mention that? Oh, I think I did! For emphasis, I thought I’d say it again. We live in a messy existence. The Universe is chaos. It is order. And we are a reflection of some of the messiest parts of this chaotic life force. By finding the order, the tidy, I am looking for ways to help planet Earth circumnavigate the chaos and lean-in toward completion.
Artistry is about circumnavigating the chaos. It is putting pleasure before pain, light before darkness, order before chaos. I’d like to be a part of the solution, not the problem. Therefore, my world-view, not much different from many artists, is to continue to contribute to the well-being of the planet. I know there is chaos. There are unknowns. I will forever strive to makes sense of the impossible. It’s just my way. What stands in your way as a creator? Are you forever chasing the dream? Looking at others who create to gauge your self? I think it’s time we all take a stand and look inwardly at our own creator.
Creativity can be a productive way to get through difficulty, but pleasure isn’t thought of as a way forward. It should be! Remember, it is not a novel idea to create beauty to help contain chaos. This is as old as the oldest religions. But something is happening to our sense of belonging on a planet that is continually creating. We’re letting the riptide wash over us. We’re tumbling in and out of our own dreams without finding a way forward. We’re letting ourselves get pummeled by these waves of grief. Creativity is a conscious activity. It is a way out of difficulty.
We can sit on our heels and be swept up by the anger or we can do something to give ourselves a creative voice. Let’s be a part of the solution. Not the problem.
